Overview

As a Junior Sommelier at Malta's only 2*Michelin restaurant ION Harbour, you will play a pivotal role in enhancing our guests’ dining experience by curating an outstanding wine selection and providing an exceptional service to our diners.  You will work closely with the rest of the F&B team to ensure the seamless pairing of wine and cuisine, contributing to the restaurant’s reputation for excellence.  

The ideal candidate possesses a recognized certification from a reputable wine education program, fuelled by a deep passion for wine. Your profound understanding of varietals, regions, and vintages will be invaluable in creating memorable experiences for our patrons.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assists in the creation and maintenance of the restaurant’s wine list.  
  • Collaborates with the senior sommeliers to source, select and procure wines from various regions.  
  • Monitors and manages wine inventory, ensuring proper storage and rotation.  
  • Ensures tables are impeccably set with appropriate glassware for the different wine selections. 
  • Greets and welcomes guests with enthusiasm, offering assistance and recommendations for wine choices. 
  • Presents, opens and pours wines for guests demonstrating excellent service and wine presentation skills.  
  • Engages in wine discussions and offers detailed descriptions of the wines on the list.  
  • Collaborates with the culinary team to develop and maintain a wine pairing menu.  
  • Provides expert recommendations for wine pairings based on the restaurant’s cuisine.  
  • Continuously seeks to expand one’s knowledge of wines, winemaking and wine regions.  
  • Addresses guest inquiries and resolves any wine-related issues or concerns.  
  • Adheres to the highest service standards and ensures the restaurant’s reputation for excellence is upheld. 
  • Collaborates with colleagues in the front and back of house to maintain a harmonious and efficient service environment. 
  • Participates in regular stock-take and inventory exercises for the wine cellar. 
  • Take measures to reduce waste and minimise costs wherever possible, while maintaining high standards of service. 
  • Contributes to the overall guest experience and ambiance of the restaurant.  
  • Ensures that breakage and loss of restaurant equipment is kept to a minimum, promptly reporting any issues to the Restaurant Manager or other members of management. 
  • Adheres to all safety, sanitation and food handling standards, ensuring a safe and hygienic dining environment. 
  • Carries out other job-related duties as required. 

Qualifications & Experience 

  • Certification from a recognised wine education programme (e.g. Court of Master Sommeliers or WSET) is a must. 
  • A minimum of 1 year experience in a similar position in a fine-dining or Michelin-starred restaurant.  
  • Passion for wine and a strong knowledge of wine varietals, regions and vintages.  
  • Proficiency in wine service techniques, including decanting and wine presentation.  
  • Superior customer service skills, with the ability to anticipate guest needs and provide personalised attention. 
  • Outstanding communication skills, with fluency in the English language.  
  • An eagerness to learn and stay updated on industry trends.  
  • A team player mindset, with the ability to collaborate effectively with others. 
  • Required to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays.
